Cuttack, Dec 9 (Odisha.in) Now, Tagore songs, popularly known as Rabindrasangeet can be heard in Oriya as well, thanks to upcoming singer Trupti Panda.

She has assorted 24 songs out of approximately 2,400-odd compositions of the Nobel laureate poet, Rabindranath Tagore and rendered them in Oriya (also in its original Bengali) in double-CD packs.

The two albums, 'He Jibananath' and 'Nupura Baje Rini Rini' consist of 12 soul-elevating songs each. While the former compilation is exclusively from the devotional songs published in the poet's magnum opus, The Gitanjali (which won him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913); the latter one is a collection of love songs.

The lyrics have been translated into Oriya by Prof. Ananta Charan Sukla, a retired professor of English and a scholar of international repute. The recording has been done at NTD Recording Studio, Cuttack by recordist Pintu Mishra.

For the first time in the history of performing Rabindra sangeet, compositions have been translated and rendered in Oriya. This is an humble, yet arduous effort by talented Panda to popularise Tagore Songs in her mother tongue, Oriya.

In this recording she has selected two song categories, Prem and Puja, out of four others viz. Prakriti,  Swadesh, Bichitra and Anusthanik. The selected songs happen to be most popular and frequently sung compositions which have enamored Rabindra sangeet lovers for generations.

Panda has very brilliantly captured the various moods and emotions of the songs awarding ample justice to the rendition. Even it's hard to believe the apt pronunciations by the Oriya singer in the Bengali version unless one hears it.

Rabindranath Tagore loved the people of Orissa.  Tagore had once referred his connections with Orissa for a century and had said, "I also belong to Orissa. I entertain goodwill, love and affection for the people of Orissa..."

On May 9 (Tagore's 146th birthday) this year, a set of 10  VCDs depicting 40 Tagore songs rendered by celebrated artists like Ustad Rashid Khan, Ajoy Chakravorty, Anup Jalota et al was released in the Parliament House by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Last year, Panda had released her debut album, 'Eka Eka Bhala Lagena',  a cover version recording of old Oriya evergreen film songs of the 1960s as a rare musical tribute to the non-Oriya legendary singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Nirmala Mishra and Sandhya Mukherjee who had lent their golden, immaculate voices to Oriya lyrics culminating in  timeless Oriya songs.

Gifted with a melodious voice and tonal subtleties, Panda, who hails from Garadpur in Kendrapara district, is a classically trained singer under the tutelage of Pt. Gopal Panda.

She has also training in light music from eminent singer Subash Dash. She has lent her voice in some Oriya albums, modern and devotional, and performed live in various prestigious platforms.

She is also continuing her MCA from Ravenshaw University after graduating in Physics Hons from Salipur College.

Rabindra sangeet refers to a complete body of songs and lyrical poetry written and composed by the Nobel-laureate poet.

The term refers to both the genre and the individual songs themselves. These songs are regarded as cultural treasures of Bengal in both Bangladesh and West Bengal.

The songs, which deal with varied themes, are the outcome of 500 years of literary & cultural churning that the Bengali community has gone through. It has evolved into a distinctive school of music which demands an educated, intelligent & cultured audience to appreciate the lyrical beauty of his compositions.
