IIT submits master plan for twin cities

Bhubaneswar, Oct 25 (odisha.in) Indian Institute of Kharagpur has submitted a master plan for the development of the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar to the state government, official said Thursday.

The population and business activities are on rise in the twin cities and for its integrated development the state government had assigned the IIT Kharagpur to prepare a master plan.

The IIT experts led by Prof. B.K.Sengupta and Prof. Uttam Kumar Chattopadhyay submitted its plan "Bhubaneswar- Cuttack Urban Complex Vision-2030” to the chief minister Naveen Patnaik here Wednesday.

"Vision-2030 has been prepared for 721 Sq Km areas comprising Chowdwar, Jatnai and Khurda along with the capital city of Bhubaneswar and the millennium Cuttack city as the estimated population will touch around 42 lakh against the present 18 lakh", Prof.Sengupta told Odisha.in.

If implemented at least Rs.32,000 crore rupees will be spent for over a period of 22 years for the development of the twin cities of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack along with three adjoining townships.

"The integrated development plan has covered areas into four segments – 11 intensive, 4 extensive, 3 restricted and seven sensitive zones while taking up the implementation of the future city", he said.

Since the two cities and its fringe areas has abounded historical and heritage sites, the plan stress on the proper utilization land in the restricted areas covering the Old Bbubaneswar, Old Cuttack and Choudwar.

Prof.Sengupta said that IIT Kharagpur will submit the comprehensive development Plan for the implementation of the urban Complex-Vision 30 in September next year.

The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack urban complex vision-2030 will stress on the economic development, employment generation, creation of basic infrastructure, mass transit system, traffic management, drinking water supply, Housing development, land management, heritage conservation and slum development

Besides, the urban development Minister K.V.Singh Deo said, it has been planned to prepare similar perspective plans for development of seven other urban areas those have development authorities in the second phase.

They are Sambalpur, Berhampur, Anugul-Talcher, Kalinganagar, Puri, Paradeep and Jharsuguda.

He said the plan would be prepared under the guidelines of the town and country planning authorities under the Union Urban development Ministry soon for submission centre for funding.

After the clearance of government of India, tender will be floated for inviting suitable consultancy farms to execute the plan in the seven urban centers, he said.

The Additional Secretary, Urban Development department, Arun Kumar Panda said that in order to avoid traffic jam , RITES has been entrusted the job of preparing a report on mass transit system for Bhubaneswar and Cuttack

The experts also here gave a detailed presentation while submitting the integrated development plan at the State Secretariat, later said that the perspective plan envisages the status paper, economic survey and final proposals.
