Congress MLA Anantram Majhi passes away

Born in January 10,1934 in a Tribal Kandh family in the village Tikiri now under the Rayagada district. Majhi joined Congress in 1962 and served the people as Sarpanch for consecutive eight years.

Bhubaneswar, November 26(Odisha.in) The sitting Congress MLA and former Minister Anantram Majhi from Laxmipur died  Sunday evening here at private Vivekananda Hospital .

Majhi was suffering from Cancer and was admitted in the hospsital as his condition worsened on Friday last, hospital sources said. He was 73  and was survived by two sons and six daughters.

A veteran tribal leader,Majhi  started his political career with Indian National Congress in the year 1962 and was elected to the Orissa Assembly for record six times since 1967 as Congress MLA.

His first stint as MLA was  1967-71  from the Rayagada (ST) constituency in the undivided Koraput district and  later  represented the Laxmipur  (ST) seat  from 1974-77, and continued election spree from the same seat in 1980-85, 1985-90,1995-2000 and 2004 till his death on November 25,2007 .

As a legislature, he was member of various assembly committees  like Library Committee, Committee on Cooperatives and Amentities Committee and became Minister of state for Health and Family welfare from  2nd February 1999 to 6 th December 1999 under then Chief Minister Giridhari Gomango.


Chief Minister Naveen patnaik, Speaker of Orissa Assembly Maheswar Mohanty , Leader of Opposition J.B.Patnaik, PCC chief Jayadev Jena condoled the death of Majhi descrining him a great tribal leader .

District intelligence bureau officials told Odisha.in that the Maoists rushed the village under Gudari police station, 80 kilometers from here late night and shot dead the villager suspecting him to be a police informer.
Patnaik visits Kashipur, reviews situation

It was not the first visit of Patnaik to the area. He had visited this tribal populated region in 2000 when there were reports of starvation deaths. But nothing has changed over the past years.
