Bhubaneswar, April 4 (Odisha.in) A police inspector was suspended and a judicial inquiry was ordered in Orissa on Monday following a complaint by a judge that policemen misbehaved him.
Arun Patnaik, the judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) at the steel city of Rourkela alleged that he was picked by a police party on Saturday night when he was standing near his official residence in that city.
He was also beaten up by the inspector in charge of the local Udit nagar police station though he identified himself. He was allegedly allowed to go home after some court officials and senior district officials intervened.
The incident evoked strong reactions among the members of legal community across the state. Lawyer on Monday boycotted court, staged protest in several places including in state capital Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and in Rourkela.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik described the incident as unfortunate and told reporters here the police inspector Sadananda Pujari, has been placed under suspension with immediate effect.
The government has also ordered a judicial probe into the incident, he said. The government will request the Orissa High Court to name a judge to initiate the probe, he said.
