JSPl inks pact for industrial park

Bhubaneswar, Nov 15 (Odisha.in) Steel and power producer Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) on Tuesday signed an agreement with the Odisha government to set up an industrial park, state industries secretary P.Ramachandru said.

The pact was signed between senior officials of both the state government and the company at the state secretariate in the presence of senior officials and state steel and mines minister Raghunath Mohanty.

JSPL has proposed to set up the park over an area of 1,400 acres at Parjang in the district Angul, at about 161 kms from here at an investment of Rs.500 crore, he told Odisha.in.

This Industrial Park will provide a unique opportunity to the entrepreneurs of the state to set up their industrial units in the shortest possible time.

The park is expected to become operational from 2013-14, Rajesh Jha, executive director of the JSPL’s Odisha project told odisha.in

It will focus on select target recovery based industries and other medium and small-scale downstream units that would both add value and result in increased industrial activity, he said. The new project will create direct and indirect employment for approximately 32,000 people.

JSPL also seeks to meet the power requirements of industrial units coming up in the industrial park by supply of power from its captive power plant and independent power project coming up in the near by area. The company proposes to take a distribution license for supply of power to the industrial Park, he said.

JSPL is currently setting up a six million tonne per annum integrated steel plant, a coal gasification unit and 80,000 barrels per day capacity coal to liquid (CTL) project few kms away from the site where it wants to set up the park.

The first phase of the steel plant (2million tonne per annum is expected to be commissioned by June 2012. The company has already invested Rs 12,000 crores in the steel project so far, he said.

JSPL has earlier successfully implemented an industrial park at Punjipathra in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh, fuelling development and growth in the state.

Spread across 750 acres, and at an investment of Rs.265 crores, the Jindal Industrial Park at Raigarh has been strategically designed to fulfill the company’s objective of developing the backward areas of that state and create job opportunities for the large number of underprivileged people.

The company provides infrastructural assistance by providing land, roads and drains along with consistent supply of power at a competitive rate to the units established in the park, he said.

Till date, 30 such units are flourishing and 70 more are in the pipeline. The company is holding a distribution license for supplying power to the units in the Industrial Park at Raigarh, he added.

The Industrial Park in Chhattisgarh has created direct and indirect employment to about 7,120 persons, he said.

Orissa seeks ban on iron ore exports

Bhubaneswar, Oct 22(Odisha.in) Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday sought a complete ban on the exports of iron ore from India.

Patnaik made the demand while participating in the 56th meeting of the National Development Council at New Delhi chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

He also drew the attention of the council to the ‘supernormal profits’ being enjoyed by the mining companies operating in his state.

He informed that the profits of mining operators exceed even the approved annual plan size of Orissa.

Such an unwarranted state is the outcome of flawed central policies which have perpetuated low royalty rates and artificially low prices determined by Indian Bureau of Mines, Patnaik said.

In the interests of mineral bearing states, he strongly advocated the need for imposing Mineral Resources Rent Tax on mining companies, to be charged at 50 percent of the surplus rent.

This would help mineral rich states like Orissa to raise much needed resources for development, he added. Suggesting that the export of ore should be banned, he said technologies be developed to derive benefits of value addition.

Odisha.in

NALCO 2010/11 aluminium output up, alumina slumps

Bhubaneswar, April 3 (Odisha.in) The state owned National National Aluminium Co Ltd (Nalco) on Sunday said its aluminium output for 2010/11 has increased by three percent in the year end to March from 431,448 tonnes a year ago.

However its alumina production has slumped to 15.56 lakh tonnes from previous year’s 15.92 lakh tones.

The alumina production felled because of the delay of its refinery expansion at Damanjodi in Koraput district. a senior company official told ‘Odisha.in’.

The delay was mainly due to the Maoists attack on its mines in the nearby areas two years ago. After the attack the contractors and contract labourers engaged in the refinery expansion had left the place and did join work for quite a long period.

The commissioning of expansion was slated for January delayed up to March, he said. The company could not add the extra capacity and produced less alumina, he said.

Nalco has however achieved the highest-ever aluminium production of 443,597 tonnes in 2010/11, the official said.

Besides, Nalco’s Alumina Refinery has achieved 98.8 per cent capacity utilization, while its Bauxite Mines has produced 48.24 lakh tonnes with a capacity utilization of 100.5 per cent, he said.

Moreover, Nalco’s captive power plant has also recorded the highest-ever net power generation of 6,608 million units, against the previous best of 6,293 million units achieved in 2009-10.

On the sales front too, it has achieved the highest-ever metal sale of 438,952 tonnes, against the previous best of 435,979 tonnes in 2009-10.

The company said it was possible due to considerable rise in demand for aluminium and improvement in company’s share in the domestic market.

The company also recorded the highest-ever domestic metal sale of 340,752 tonnes in 2010-11, surpassing the previous highest of 289,032 tonnes in the previous fiscal, he said.

Nalco also achieved a record sale of 20,022 tonnes of rolled products in the domestic market in 2010-11, against the previous best of 14,419 tonnes in 2009-10. This year the company has also added aluminium T-Ingots to its product range, which is first of its kind in Indian aluminium industry, he said.

Nalco had resumed its billet exports in 2009-10, after a gap of a decade and in 2010-11, the company exported 4614 tonnes of billets.

More production and sale of rolled products and billets have increased the proportion of value added products in the company’s operations. Besides, Nalco has also widened its international customer base by adding new overseas clients during the year, the company official said.

Water watchdog warns about 58000 MW energy plans

Sambalpur, March 22 (Odisha.in) A local water watchdog on Tuesday warned about the possible danger of the thermal power plants Orissa is planning to set up in an attempt to produce 58000 MW power in seven-eight years.

Speaking here on the occasion of ‘World Water Day’ Ranjan Panda, convenor, of ‘Water Initiatives Odisha (WIO)’ said in the last 2-3 years, the state government has signed as many as 27 pacts for generation of thermal power to the tune of 35000 MW.

“The capacity will increase to about 58,000 MW in seven-eight years. To produce the thermal power, the thermal plants would require a minimum of 2297 million cubic meter of water per year” he told 'Odisha.in'.

“This is enough to meet the domestic water requirement of close to 210 million people. It means about six states of the size of the state’s domestic water requirement” he said. “The rivers, surface water bodies and ground water of the state will be under severe stress if this plan comes to realization” he said.

Orissa is boasting of two digit growth rate. To maintain that more industrialization, through all water guzzling industries like steel, sponge iron, cement, thermal power and mining, will be pushed through with much vigour” he said.

“That means the water demand of the state will surpass the supply much sooner than expected” he said.

“We have argued upon the government to refrain from going for thermal power plant, rather it should invest more on non conventional energy sources” he said.

“We have been also demanding the government to release a white paper on water availability in the state at present as well as in the future taking into account all the sectors” he said.

“If the government does not change its plans, we are surely waiting for a doomed future within a decade or so” he said.

Bhubaneswar, June 4 (Odisha.in) India’s second biggest producers of aluminium Nalco has planned to invest Rs. 40,000 crore expansions in India and abroad over next five years.

The Govt of India has conferred the Navratna status on National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco).

The coveted status is conferred on select Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSE), which emerge as significant players in the economic development of the country, having comparative advantages and capacity to become global giants.

With this elevated status, Nalco now enjoys more managerial powers and commercial autonomy, to chart its own course in the world market.

In order to emerge as a company of global repute, Nalco has drawn ambitious growth plans involving this massive investment, the company said in a release.

These include Smelter and Power Projects in Indonesia, South Africa and Iran. Besides, the company is planning brownfield and greenfield growth projects within the country.

Brownfield Expansions :

Creditably, except for the part funding of the capital cost of the original project to the tune of Rs.1288.62 crore by way of equity, Nalco has not depended on the Government budgetary support at any point of time – not even for the Rs.3600-crore 1st phase expansion project.

Continuing with its self-propelled growth, now the 2nd phase expansion is under implementation at an investment of Rs.4092 crore, which is scheduled to be completed by 2008 end.

Unit Original Capacities After 1st Phase Expansion After 2nd Phase Expansion
Bauxite Mines 24,00,000 MT 48,00,000 MT 63,00,000 MT
Alumina Refinery 8,00,000 MT 15,75,000 MT 21,00,000 MT
Aluminium Smelter 2,30,000 MT 3,45,000 MT 4,60,000 MT
Power Plant 600 MW 960 MW 1200 MW

Now, plans are afoot for 3rd phase expansion, which is likely to entail an expenditure to the tune of Rs.6000 crore. Under this expansion, the bauxite mining capacity shall be enhanced to around 90 lakh tonnes, alumina refining to 30 lakh tonnes, aluminium smelting to 6.3 lakh tonnes and power generation to 1700 MW per annum.

Greenfield Projects :

Nalco has also plans to set up new Projects in the country.

A Mines & Refinery Complex is being planned in Andhra Pradesh. The Bauxite Mines capacity will be 42 lakh tonnes, while the refinery will have a capacity of 14 lakh tonnes.

Draft MoU is under negotiation with Govt of Andhra Pradesh. The project will involve an investment of Rs.7000 crore.

In Orissa, a Smelter & Power Complex has been planned in Ib valley in Jharsuguda District at an investment of Rs.8500 crore. This project envisages a smelter of 5 lakh tonne capacity and a coal-based power plant of 1260 MW capacity. Pre-feasibility report has been finalized by EIL.

Nalco has submitted an application for allotment of water resources, the most critical factor, to the Govt of Orissa, last month.

New Projects abroad :

At the beginning of this year, Nalco signed an MoU with the Govt of Indonesia, to set up a 5-lakh tonne Smelter and a 1250 mw Captive Power Plant in that country. Nalco plans to invest around Rs.14,000 crore in this greenfield project.

Besides, Nalco is exploring the possibilities of setting up a Smelter and Power Plant in South Africa at an investment of around Rs.16,000 crore.

In Iran, a 3.1-lakh tonne Smelter has been planned, in two phases, as a joint venture with ALPHA (in which Kerman Development Organization is the major partner). The MoU was signed in March this year. The project cost will be approximately Rs.8000 crore.

The foreign projects are not exclusive, rather these are being pursued simultaneously, with an objective that any one or two of these would be ultimately taken up on the basis of viability and time required.

Other Projects

Aluminium Park :
Nalco has plans to set up an Aluminium Park in Angul, as a joint venture with Orissa Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO). For this 500 acres of land is being acquired. Nalco & IDCO shall take care of basics like infrastructure, communication and power supply.

The proposed upstream industries shall go for products like Caustic Soda, Aluminium Fluoride, CT Pitch and CP Coke; while downstream industries shall explore the possibilities of Castings, Extrusions, Aluminium Conductor, Aluminium Plates & Rounds, besides other products.

Aluminium Wagons :

At the same time, Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Nalco have entered into an agreement to collaborate for the production of aluminium rail wagons.

Aluminium rail coaches and metro coaches shall be taken up subsequently. As per the agreement, the products would be jointly developed by these two leading PSUs and Nalco would supply the aluminium extrusions after conversion from its billets and ingots through a third party.

The aluminium wagons and coaches have several advantages like light weight, higher carrying capacity, environment friendliness, lower life cycle cost etc.

Cement Plant :

Expression of Interest has been invited from competent parties to set up a cement plant based on fly ash of Nalco’s power plant at Angul. Offers of two bidders, Sree Cement and Cement Manufacturing Company have been found acceptable and these two have been shortlisted for joint venture.

The project will involve an investment of Rs.300 crore. Bidders need mining lease for limestone in Orissa to go ahead with the project and have submitted applications.

In addition to all these, several projects are in the pipeline at various stages aimed at backward integration to ensure smooth and economic sourcing of raw materials.

Odisha.in

Lessly had also acted in a patriotic song album produced by Biranchi a few months ago.

Das had come to limelight after he discovered the hidden talent in Budhia Singh, a slum boy, and groomed and coached him for a 65 km run from Puri to Bhubaneswar on May 2, 2006.

The wonder kid was just five-year-old when he completed the run non-stop in seven hours and two minutes, creating a record of sorts. The run, however, had triggered a controversy with several organisations and child welfare bodies objecting to such shows involving a little boy.

Even Budhia's mother, Sukanti, had lodged an FIR against Das accusing him of physically torturing the child. She had also sought security cover for Budhia and herself.

Biranchi Das was arrested on August 13, 2007 on the suspicion of torturing Budhia. Das had denied the charges saying these were made up as a result of some petty rows.

Budhia, who was living with mother and sisters in capital city's biggest slum Salia Sahi after being separated from coach Biranchi Das, had been adopted by Orissa government. The boy, who was sent to the state-run hostel at Kalinga Stadium, was later admitted to a reputed public school here.

Budhia was taken aghast when he heard the news about shooting of Biranchi. He said that he was sad to hear such a news. It was Biranchi who had brought him to lime light and had entered his name in the Limca Book of Records. He had assured him to make him participate in Olympic also.

The gunning down of Das sparked off a sensation with his brother Susanta Das alleging that known gangster Raja Acharya was involved in the killing.

DCP Thakur said police was working on some leads based on preliminary information obtained from eyewitnesses and others.

A senior police official said the assailants had fired five shots from 9 mm pistol of which three hit the coach on his neck and chest.

Eyewitnesses said the wife and sister of Das were also present at hall when a ceremony of preparing "sarbat", a traditional beverage was being prepared as a part of celebrations of the Oriya new year day and the incident
occurred.

Das had gone out of the building following snap in electricity supply when the assailants struck, triggering panic in the complex.

Odisha.in

New mining policy exposes centre's colonial mindset

Sir,

I am a Oriya from bangalore and I am a regular reader of your site. The recent news publiched on your portal about our popular CM is compelling me to pen a few words.

Its a pity that due to low population and therefore less number of MPs in indian parliament our mother land has always in the receiving end of the central developement project.

Though the people of orissa have been blamed by these North Indian people and their politicians for our current economic status it is not true at all.

For last 50 years untill the late dicision of union govt to liberalize the economy these North Indian politicians have been taking away a lions share of what aver monitary assistance the country was getting from( world bank and IMF.... ) in the form of loans.

Still today with the economic progress of the federation the the parliamentarians of this country are not least serious in granting fund for basic infrastructure developement and institutes of higher studies.

But the current decision of the Union Govt regarding its mining policy has indeed surpassed everything. Its a discriminatory and just an ex-pression of colonial mindset of these politicians who have made this dicision. But it is the duty of every oriya to safeguard their interest and stand in one voice with our CM.

Regards
Deepak,
Bangalore

Govt takes year to respond court’s queries on police firing

Kendrapada, Jan 4 (Odisha.in) The State government took more than a year to respond to court’s quaries on 2006 firing at Kalinga nagar.

The government has filed counter affidavit in response to the first judicial intervention into the matter in a Public Interest Litigation filed by pioneer human right group Committee for Legal Aid to Poor (CLAP) of state just after the occurrence of the incidence.

The CLAP filed its petition seeking a status quo in developing the industry until final resolution of the demands of the indigenous people in 9th January 2006 in a writ petition in the High Court. TATA Steel Limited, which is an essential Party, is yet to file its reply.

The counter affidavit filed by Special Secretary to Govt. in November 2007 reveals half hidden truths relating to the claim of the govt. that adequate steps have been taken to resolve the matter.

Even it is clear now that only two persons out of 14 tribal who succumbed to the police firing have been given the ex-gratia of 10 lakhs whereas 12 persons did not accept the offer.

Similarly the declaration of the Govt. for compensation to the tune of 50,000.00 to person sustained injury could not be given to 17 persons because of paucity of fund with the district administration.

If the Govt. resolution is to be believed then these compensation is a benevolent support rather than the rights of indigenous people who were victims of a state sponsored crime, said Shyama Sundar Das the president of CLAP.

The PIL of CLAP raised a vital legal question that the situation could have been averted had there been due diligence in time on the recommendation of the Special Rapporteur of National Human Right Commission which was given much prior to the occurrence of the incidence.

The counter affidavit filed by the government reveals that steps like payment of assistance to the tune of 25,000.00 for each person who lost land and 50,000.00 for house building assistance had been announced, however in a much delayed stage in May 2006 after the incidence had already occurred.

The petitioner Shyam Sundar Das, the President of CLAP observes that the administrative short sightedness in taking the recommendation of NHRC seriously contributed the occurrence of the massacre.

Das further said that the NHRC recommendation was a clear indication for the administration that the situation was not within the control and instead of taking precautionary measure like imposing 144 under Criminal Procedure Code or even for that matter curfew deployment of a small section of police is not an indication of an efficient administration.

Therefore, Das said, the argument of the Govt. that when people overpowered police then only the Executive Magistrate ordered for firing is not logical and unfounded. No preventive measures were taken before giving the order for firing to avoid occurrence of the incidence, which was a procedural defect.

Meanwhile by virtue of a decision of the apex court in I.A. No. 6/2007 in University of Kerala vs. Council, Principals' Colleges, Kerala and others, the Judicial Commission headed by Justice A.S. Naidu was dissolved.

After almost a year, it is still under consideration of the Govt. whether to constitute a Commission or not. The counter affidavit suggests that Govt. considers this aspect.

The PIL of CLAP inter allia demanded that a Policy for Rehabilitation and Resettlement be made which seems to have received the attention of the Govt. as the counter affidavit reveals that the Govt. has contemplated Orissa Resettlement and Rehabilitation Policy 2006 which was notified in the Gazette in 14th May 2006, after the notice in the PIL was issued by the High Court.

Balasore, December 23 (odisha.in) Government officials (not all) who supposed to implement various developmental activities in the state are the main impediments for the land acquisition that occurred just before setting up of a new industry, said Anup Pattanaik, additional DG of police and director vigilance.

Pattanaik was speaking at a workshop on "Industrialisation and Corruption in Orissa" organized by Orissa Civil Liberty Forum (OCLF) in RJ school of management studies at RJ Vidya Vihar on Balasore-Chandipur Road on Friday.

Recalling his experience during his tenure as superintendent of police in Dhenkanal district he described how some officers had encroached the government lands and some others purchased the land belonged to downtrodden in a cheap rate just before the declaration of Nalco project in the district.

"Such officers know where the industries are going to set up well before the locals. As they have access with the revenue officials, they first encroach the local land and then legally take it into their custody tactfully," the vigilance director said.

"When a project is declared they through the locals suddenly demand high rate of the land value and too insist them to go for agitation thereby lingering the process to get benefit out of that," he pointed out.

Speaking on corruption, Pattanaik however stated that the countries which were pointing fingers to others too were indulged in corrupt practices a decade ago.

Chief resource person of the workshop Rajya Sabha MP Baijayant Panda discussed how to make Orissa a less-corrupt state.
Jajpur, Dec 21 (Odisha.in) Hundreds of unemployed youths under the banner of Sukinda Unemployed Technical Youth Association (SUTYA) staged an agitation before the Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL), located in Kalinga Nagar, the steel hub of India in Orissa’s Jajpur district on Friday.

They demanded appointment to the technical youths of the locality and high-level inquiry into the irregularities meted out during the selection of some ITI Trainees and Diploma Engineer Trainees to be absorbed in the plant.

The youths led by the SUTYA president Dharmananda Ray also locked the entrance gate of the steel plant for over six hours and prevented man and material into the industry.

Works inside the plant was paralysed and production hampered following the agitation, which has resulted in huge loss to the organization. Later police reached at the spot and brought the situation under control.

They claimed despite repeated assurances the JSL authorities were not giving them appointments and appointing non-Oriyas and the outsiders in it.

"Nearly 2300 ITI and Diploma Engineers pass-outs had appeared in a written examination held by the company seven months back. But the authorities have called a few for final selection to be held on December 23, 24,25,26 and 27," said Suryamani Biswal, general secretary of the association.

"Earlier though JSL management had assured us to absorb all the technical youths of Sukinda area, but this time they called the aspirants on their choice by whom they have been gained over. There has been high-scale corruption during the short-listing the candidates," he alleged.

The locals also alleged that the company has violated all the norms of selection procedures of the aspirants. "The company called for viva seven months after the written examination and that too in a short notice.

Even it is also not disclosing how many ITI pass-outs it really wants," pointed out Ashotosh Mishra, general secretary of Vyasa Unemployed Youth Organisation, a forum formed for the interest of local unemployed youths in Kalinga Nagar.

“The JSL management is adopting an illegal practice in selecting ITI and Diploma Engineers Trainees. Some of the senior positions of the company have been bribed for issuing Viva letters to the candidates, appeared written test about seven months ago,” Mr. Mishra said.

Is it proper forum on the part of General Manager (Human Resources) of JSL to negotiate the agitating people in a police station, he questioned.

In a press release the JSL authorities that some local self-styled & so called “SUTIYA “ organizations want to take mileage and undue credit out of the selection procedure of ITI and Diploma Engineers Trainees & with their vested interest are trying to prevail upon the JSL-management to pressurize them to meet their ends.

The management has always given paramount consideration to the interest of the local youth. The unwanted interference by handful persons is building a threat on the future of the industrial growth as well as a serious set back to the economy of an up-coming state, it stated.

Odisha.in

Jajpur, November 16 (Odisha.in) Tension prevailed high Friday in the Kalinga Nagar, the steel hub of India in Orissa’s Jajpur district after following an accident in the Jindal stainless Limited (JSL) plant premises in which two persons were injured.

Both injured have been identified as safety stewards of the plant.According to Kalinga Nagar police station sources, the mishap occurred about 7.30 pm Thursday when the some safety stewards of the plant who were on duty were hit by a Hydro machine from behind in the Jindal Stainless Limited plant premises.

Two of the security stewards sustained serious injuries during the erection of the power plant inside the plant premises, which was being carried out by L& T Company following hit by the Hydro machine.

The injured have been identified as Sunil Kumar Swain (45) and Subhransu Dubey (40). The injured were admitted to a private hospital at Cuttack in a critical condition.

Tension prevailed in the Kalinga Nagar Industrial complex area immediately after the mishap.

One platoon of police force has been deployed at the site. Unrest among the workers was on when reports last came in.

“After being seriously injured in the plant premises, both Sunil and Subhransu were rushed to a private hospital in Cuttack without any primary treatment at the government hospital, located in the industrial complex area jurisdiction," told K.C. Mund, Inspector-in-Charge of Kalinga Nagar police station.

“Though the situation is under controlled, discontentment is brewing among the JSL plant workers. One platoon of police force has been deployed at the site to maintain strict vigil,” Mr. Mund added.

Jindal Stainless Contact Labourers Union (JSCLU) President, Bidyadhar Mohanty said, “Accident in Jindal Stainless Limited in Kalinga Nagar is chronic and it is pioneer in hijacking the injured after the mishap.

The plant is not taking safety measures for the work force despite repeated pleas by the workers and our union. That’s why the accidents in the JSL are taking place regularly. Besides absence of a factory inspector at the steel hub creates an opportunity for the steel companies in the Kalinga Nagar steel hub to encash out of the situation”.

In every accident why the JSL is avoiding local government hospital, situated in the industrial complex area in admitting the injured for primary treatment, he questioned. “This practice is to hide the mishap”.

It should be stopped immediately, otherwise the company has to a heavy price for the same”, Mr. Mohanty threatened.

Odisha.in

He said with the submission of the DPR; state government would allot ten Acres of land for the construction of the institute.

Since the small and Medium sector is considered as the highest provider of employment with low investment than that of the major industries, state government has formed a state-level committee to record the reasons of large scale sickness and to recommend how to address the problem.

Stating that a fresh census of micro, small and medium industries would be undertaken in the state from November next, he said by the end of March 2006, an estimated 37408 small and medium industries have been registered in the state with an investment of Rs.1.25 lakh crores and provide employment to 2.69 lakh persons.

However, he said that though sickness of small and medium industries is a
National Phenomena, it's primarily due to use of obsolete Technology.

He said that state Industries department, in association with the Micro, small and Medium enterprises Development Institute, Cuttack under the Union ministry of Micro, small and Medium enterprises, NSIC, KVIC, Coir Board and Small scale Industries Association would organize Expo-Orissa ,2007 – a National level Industry and Trade fair

Nalco achives Rs.439.73 crore net profit

Bhubaneswar, October 23 (Odisha.in) National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), the flagship PSU of the Ministry of Mines, and India’s largest manufacturer and exporter of alumina and aluminium, has reported excellent results for the 2nd quarter ended September 2007.

According to the unaudited financial results for the 2nd quarter of the financial year 2007-08 taken on record in the Board of Directors meeting held in Vizag on October 23, the Company has achieved a net profit of Rs.439.73 crore, with a sales turnover of Rs.1432.12 crore. However, during the 2nd quarter of previous fiscal, the figures were up at Rs.595 crore and Rs.1582.65 crore respectively.

The net profit and sales turnover for the half year ended September 2007 work out to Rs.886.39 crore and Rs.2719.24 crore respectively, as against the corresponding figures of Rs.1217.30 crore and Rs.3203.47 crore achieved during the first six months of the previous fiscal.

The lower realization is primarily because of lower global alumina prices and importantly, a rising rupee. Supply of coal, a major raw material, was also adversely affected during the 2nd quarter, which compelled the company to resort to use of imported coal and to purchase of power from external sources. This has resulted in additional expenditure of Rs.39.75 crore during the quarter.

Odisha.in

Oriplast labourers demand 20 per cent bonus, sit on Dharma

Balasore, Oct 16 (Odisha.in) Hundreds of contract labourers working in Oriplast plastic pipe factory here are on a mass dharna since last four days with their various demands.

The labourers under the banner of 'Oriplast Mazdoor Sabha' were demanding implementation of the agreement signed between the company officials and labourers regarding their salary and at least 20 percent bonus for the contract labourers.

The contract labourers led by Arun Swain, general secretary of Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) also staged a demonstration and protest meeting in front of the company gate besides opposing the entry of officials and other company workers.

"The labourers got agitated after the company declared 20 percent bonus for the company labourers and 8.33 percent for contract laourers," claimed Swain.

"With the same labour the company labourers get more salary then the contract labourers. But the bonus amount should be the same for both the category. It is unjust on the part of company authorities as they always neglect the contract laourers," he alleged.

Meanwhile, the company high-ups were discussing with agitating labourers to come for a settlement.

When contacted, S Patnaik, President (Works) of Oriplast, said, "How can the company labourers be compared with the contract labourers. However, we are trying to convince them and hope the problem will be resolved soon."

Odisha.in

Kalinganagar industrial complex gets a power boost

Jajpur, October 12 (Odisha.in) Power supply to Kalinga Nagar industrial complex area, the emerging steel hub in Orissa's Jajpur district, has improved thanks to the completion of 220 KV DC line connecting Kuchei in Mayurbhanj district and Balasore sub stations.

The Orissa Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (OPTCL) had assigned the work to Bhubaneswar based firm AK Das Associates Ltd (AKD).

AKD completed it in 16 months even though the Balasore- Kuchei 55 km stretch is perennially waterlogged and was particularly bad this year due to repeated floods.

In fact, the industrial units coming up Kalinga Nagar industrial area are dependent on availability of power in 400/220 KV New Duburi grid which was to be connected with Meramundali in Dhenkanal district.

The steel companies are in agreement with OPTCL for their power requirement and installed their respective steel plants.

However, the New Duburi- Meramundali line is likely to take another couple of years which is why the Balasore-Kuchei 220 KV line assumed importance since it will make available more power to Duburi grid in Kalinga Nagar.

After the line was synchronised on Friday, many industrial units in Kalinga Nagerindustrial complex area such as Visa Steels, Rohit Ferro Tech, Maithan Ispat and Power, Jindal Stainless, Dinabandhu Steel, KJ Ispat and others plant will be able avail to get their requisite power.

Duburi Electricity High Tension (EHT) grid Assistant General Manager, Budheswar Nanda said, "Earlier, Balasore and some of the area of Mayurbhanj district were depending on Duburi grid in Kalinga Nagar.

They used to consume 140 MW power and by connecting 220 KV DC line to Kuchei and Balasore sub stations we saved 70 MW for our industries in Kalinga Nager as many parts of the Mayurbhanj district to get power from the alternative source.

To ensure uninterrupted and surplus power to the industrial complex area we are also expediting the construction of Paraddep- Duburi 220 KV line on war footing to save another 160 MW. Presently power supply to both Kendrapara and Paradeep are being supplied from the Duburi grid."

The line will also be able to generate more revenue for OPTCL and Nesco. AKD which carried out the work erected as many as 236 towers in the 55 km stretch.

Odisha.in
